Buffalo Grove, Illinois sits in two counties, Lake County and Cook County. A Cook County hazard mitigation annex for the village describes the split as roughly the top three-quarters of the village in Lake County and the bottom quarter in Cook County. The village was incorporated in 1958 on 58 acres at the north edge of Cook County. Today the Village of Buffalo Grove describes itself as a home-rule municipality covering more than 9.25 square miles in both counties, about 35 miles northwest of Chicago. Because of the split, property tax bills, county services and some government offices depend on which side of the county line an address falls.
