After moving to Lake County, Illinois, you have 30 days from establishing residency to apply for Illinois vehicle registration through the Illinois Secretary of State, as long as the car is properly registered in your old state. That grace period comes from Section 3-801 of the Illinois Vehicle Code. Your driver's license runs on a separate clock: the Vehicle Code lets a new resident drive on a valid out-of-state license for the first 90 days, after which you need an Illinois license. Some towns add a local vehicle sticker on top of state registration. Libertyville, for example, requires a village sticker on every vehicle registered or housed in the village and gives new residents a 90-day grace period to buy one. Check with your own village to see whether it has a similar rule.
