The highest natural point in Lake County, Illinois is Gander Mountain, inside Gander Mountain Forest Preserve near Antioch, at 957 feet above sea level. The hill rises about 125 feet and was built from material the Laurentide glacier left behind as it retreated. The 298-acre preserve sits at 43419 W. Wilmot Road in Antioch and is part of the Lake County Forest Preserves system, with oak hickory woodland and floodplain forest. Plan ahead before you go: it is a rustic site with no maintained trails, no designated public parking and no visitor facilities, and the listing warns that roadside parking on Wilmot Road is hazardous because of limited sight lines and fast traffic. The preserve is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to sunset.
